Call for Applications: Editor in Chief - Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy

The Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy, the peer-reviewed publication of the Section on Geriatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association, invites qualified individuals to submit an application for the role of Editor in Chief.

The Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy is the leading source of clinically applicable evidence for achieving optimal health, wellness, mobility, and physical function across the continuum of health status for the aging adult. The JGPT is published quarterly by Wolters Kluwer Health | Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. The JGPT is indexed in Medline/Pubmed, CINHAL, EMBASE, AMED, Science Citation Index Expanded (SciSearch), Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition, and Current Contents/Clinical Medicine. First published in 2001, the JGPT has grown from 2 or 3 articles/per issue published three times years to a quarterly publication of up to eight research reports, special interest papers, and case reports per issue. With 60 or more submissions per year, the work of the JGPT as a source of evidence for clinical practice is supported by three Associate Editors, and a cadre of more than 120 reviewers. Since 2007, with the move to LWW as publisher, the JGPT has been using online submission and review, via the Editorial Manager platform.

Minimum qualifications for the position include a research-oriented degree (PhD, DSc, EdD), a record of successful publication, and a record of providing effective peer review for scientific journals in the field of aging. Salary to be determined

Dr. Lusardi welcomes inquiries about the role and workload of the Editor in Chief. Application deadline is September 31, 2012, with the intent to have the next editor assume the role in January 2013.

Section Members Named as Catherine Worthingham Fellows

Please join the Section on Geriatrics Board of Directors in congratulating John O. Barr, PT, PhD and Rita Wong, PT, EdD on their recent selection as 2012 Recipients of the Catherine Worthingham Fellows Award. Catherine Worthingham, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was a change agent who was effective, respectful, and honest, and motivated others to make an impact within the physical therapy profession. She was also a visionary who demonstrated leadership across the domains of advocacy, education, practice, and research. The purpose of the Catherine Worthingham Fellow designation (FAPTA) is to honor Dr. Worthingham and inspire all physical therapists to attain the high level of professional excellence and impact in terms of advancing the profession she exemplified. The FAPTA designation is the highest honor among APTA's membership categories. John and Rita will be honored at APTA 2012 in Tampa, FL on June 7^th at 6pm at the Honors and Awards Celebration.

What are you doing in May for your mother and older adults

May is more than Mother’s Day.

As a mother of two small boys, I wait for that one Sunday in May when my boys wake me up by jumping on the bed and shouting “Happy Mother’s Day”. Although Mother’s day is a cherished time for all, I’ve come to the realization that there is much more to the month of May for PT’s and PTA’s.

As the Public Relations Chair for the Section on Geriatrics, it is my professional obligation to offer ideas for outreach on behalf of our profession and the patient population we serve. As Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants we strive to educate our patients about injuries and illnesses that affect their quality of life, often by providing information regarding prevention and overall health and wellness. Many affected by health care challenges themselves or through friends and family speak out in attempts to educate others and show support. How do we encourage more individuals in the Physical Therapy profession to include education regarding prevention and health and wellness? One way is through nationally recognized observances.

“Months”, Weeks” and “Days” that symbolize and represent a certain population or group are referred to as Observances. As PT’s and PTA’s, we see the month of October dedicated to our own profession. Known as National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM), this time is utilized by APTA members as an opportunity to reach out to consumers and educate them about the unique benefits Physical Therapy. Why should we limit ourselves to only October, when there are 11 other months to promote the profession and the health and wellness of the communities we live in? The Section on Geriatrics would like to inform you of other officially recognized National observances in the month of May that can encourage opportunity for education and support to others when it comes to older adults.

Did you know that May is recognized as Older American’s Month, Correct Posture Month, National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month? Did you know that May 13^th through 19^th is National Nursing Home Week? Did you know that National Senior Health and Fitness Day is on May 30^th? YOU DO NOW! Regardless of your community population, setting, or practice, I am sure that the mention of these observances may inspire you for outreach. We all harbor a dedication and an obligation to share our knowledge and skills in ways that benefit the communities in which we live and work. Making this commitment are both personally and professionally rewarding. Education to those in your community, other healthcare providers, and other organizations can be done several ways on both national and local levels. Whether it is face to face communication with one person or a group, or reaching out to the many different media outlets that exist, there are many more opportunities than challenges to promoting health and wellness through these observances.

I want to encourage all of you to take a look at what The Section on Geriatrics (SOG) offers to assist our members in moving forward with these opportunities for outreach during these nationally recognized observances in the month of May.

With the observance of National Older Americans month the SOG -Balance and Falls SIG educational tools for the older adult with balance problems and risk of falls. A PowerPoint presentation with coordinating brochures can be distributed to your target audience. A poster on “What to do if you Fall at Home” is available to help you reach out to consumers and current patients. You can place that poster, along with your business card, in your local senior centers, assisted living centers or YMCA. These tools can also be used in recognition of National Nursing Home week. Consider this education for patients ready for discharge, family members and other health care providers with whom you coordinate care.

SOG-Bone Health SIG’s instructional videos on kypholordosis is perfect for the observance of Correct Posture Month and a tool for your education on effective evidence-based evaluation and treatment of spinal posture needs that can be taken to your selected audience. A “Standing Tall” video training program is available that focuses on patient compliance with exercise for the older adult and reinforces good postural alignment, proper body mechanics and strengthening. In recognition of National Osteoporosis Month, take a look at the new Bone Health and Fracture Prevention for Older Adults brochure. Power Point presentations “Staying Vertical: Balance and Falls Reduction” developed by the Balance and Falls Special Interest Group and Osteoporosis as well as “Osteoporosis: What you should know” developed by the Osteoporosis Special Interest Group make it easy for your outreach in recognition of these observances.

For National Senior Health and Fitness Month; “From Fail to Fun” developed by the Sections (SOG) Exercise Task Force, and “Physical Activity: A key to wellness and successful aging”, developed by the Health Promotion and Wellness Special Interest Group are two power point options for your move forward. Of key importance is the “Guide to Safe and Effective Physical Activity and Exercise for the Aging Adult” brochure that can be utilized for education on the safety of exercise. The “So you Want to Begin Exercising” power point developed by the Sections Exercise Task Force makes it easy for therapists to get started in communications with consumers. The Section on Geriatrics encourages you to take a look at these May observances as a motivator for outreach. Whether you make a commitment to do so by yourself, as a team, or as an organization, the rewards are there!

Access Your CEU Letter

Your conference CEU letter is accessible online in the APTA Learning Center. Additionally, you have the option of printing a transcript of sessions for which your badge was scanned.

Your attendance at CSM 2012 is equivalent to 1.8 CEUs (18 contact hours/CCUs). The number of CEUs awarded for each session at CSM is listed in the onsite program and in the programming descriptions on the CSM Web site . The opportunity to weigh in on your overall CSM experience can be found by clicking here.

To access your CEU letter, follow these easy steps.

Login to APTA’s website at www.apta.org. Enter your e-mail, member number or User ID. Use the "forgot your password" link if you need to reset your password.
Go to Careers and Education.
Go to APTA Learning Center.
Click on the “My Courses” tab, find CSM 2012. Click Launch next to the CSM conference and follow the directions to print your CEU letter.
