Purpose:
To recognize projects or programs in clinical practice, educational, or administrative settings which provide strong models of effective advocacy for older adults by challenging and changing ageism.
Rationale:
In her years of service to the Section, as committee member, elected Board of Directors member, and editor of GeriNotes, Lynn Phillippi provided a wonderful role model of effective advocacy for our older patients and their families. She has helped many of us to examine our attitudes and question our beliefs about aging and being old. Her tireless efforts to communicate and educate physical therapists serving older persons has been a positive influence on professional development of her peers and on the quality of life of older persons.
Criteria:
The project or program should demonstrate one or more of the following:
- Assistance to peers, patients, or members of the community to recognize the influence of "ageism" and promote positive aspects of aging.
- A mechanism to reduce or eliminate ageism where it exists.
- A mechanism to demonstrate how "ageism" has been reduced because of the efforts of the project or program.
- Recognition as a model of change for other settings.
