Clinical Excellence in Geriatrics Award

Purpose:
To recognize a physical therapist for outstanding clinical practice in a geriatric health care setting.

Rationale:
As advocates, role models innovators, and leaders in geriatric care settings, the recipients of the Clinical Excellence in Geriatrics Award demonstrate their commitment to improving the lives of older adults. The challenges of practice in this setting require specialized knowledge and appreciation of the changes that occur physically, mentally, and emotionally as one ages. Beyond that, the clinicians who are successful in this environment are adept at teamwork, innovation, creative problem solving, and education. They meet standards of excellence and challenge us all to strive to follow their example of professionalism and compassion.

Criteria:
To be eligible for this award, the nominee must:


1. Be a current member of the Section on Geriatrics;
2. Be an advocate for older adults and a role model for excellence in physical therapy practice;
3. Have been involved in geriatric clinical practice settings for a minimum of 5 years;
4. Demonstrate innovation and leadership in program planning or management, clinical education and/or outstanding quality of care multidisciplinary teamwork, in meeting the physical therapy needs of older adults.

Nomination Process:
1. Any current member of the Section on Geriatrics may nominate a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant who meets the award criteria.
2. Nomination packets should include:
a. one or more letters of nomination, addressed to the Awards Committee, describing how the nominee meets the criteria;
b. a copy of the nominee's current resume or CV.
3. The Awards Committee must receive complete nomination packets by November 1st of each year.

Selection Process:
Nominations will be reviewed by at least 3 members of the Awards Committee. The Chair of the Committee will present the Committee's recommendation to the Section Board of Directors for approval. Presentation:
The award will be presented following the Business Meeting during APTA Combined Sections Meeting, usually held in February of each year. The award will consist of a plaque and a $200 award
